If a storm puts a tree onto your roof, fence or car, the insurer generally picks up the make-safe and the cleanup tied to it. Taking out a healthy tree just because you'd rather it gone, or a routine trim, is on you. Phone your insurer before you give us the go-ahead, then ask me for a written job report and the Certificate of Currency to staple to the claim.

Get a current public liability Certificate of Currency, make them quote at the property rather than down the phone, and ask for the price broken into parts, the way in, the felling or the climbing, the roping, crane or EWP, chipping, the stump and the clean-up. Steer clear of anyone after cash before a saw runs. You want a sign-written truck and a qualified arborist actually on the tools. The blokes knocking on doors in plain utes rarely carry cover.

Mine splits out the setup, the cutting crew, any crane, EWP and traffic control, rigging where the block needs it, chipping the branches, the optional stump grind below ground, carting away the chip or logs, and the GST on its own line. When a quote is one rounded figure with no detail behind it, that's usually a price that creeps up once the crew is on site.

Was it standing on your land? Then it's yours to deal with, and your home insurer normally pays to clear it once it's hit something they cover, so call them and photograph it before anyone touches it. If next door's tree toppled onto your place, you'll still organise the removal, but you can chase the cost back through your own policy where there's damage, or theirs if they were negligent.

City of Parramatta Council runs tree removal through its Development Control Plan, so once a tree is over the size those rules set, or it's a protected native or a listed local tree, you need approval to take it out. Trees that are dead, dying or about to fall, along with declared weed species, usually slip through as exempt. If the land is mapped bushfire-prone, the 10/50 Vegetation Clearing scheme can let you clear within set distances of the house. Check with the council first either way, because clearing without approval draws penalties under the NSW planning legislation.

It's the getting-to-it and the danger that costs, not the sawing. A tree you can fell into open lawn is quick and cheap. One tucked behind a unit block, 800mm gate, no rear lane, wires strung overhead, needs a crane, traffic control and every branch tied off and lowered by hand. That's a long day of climbing, gear most people never see, and the insurance to back it. The chainsaw is the cheap five minutes at the end.

After the grind, fill the hollow with topsoil and firm it down, because raw chip on its own sinks as it rots. Going for lawn? Roll couch or buffalo over a layer of screened topsoil and keep the water up daily for the first ten days. For a garden bed, give the spot a season to settle before you put in anything precious, since the leftover wood pulls nitrogen out of the soil while it breaks down.
