A stump left in place after a removal slowly turns into a problem. The wood holds moisture, attracts termites and pathogens, throws suckers from the root plate, and heaves nearby pavers or concrete as the roots die and shift. Grinding it out in one visit clears all of that. Around Parramatta we run two machines depending on the access: a narrow walk-behind that fits an 800mm gate for tight Harris Park and North Parramatta courtyards, and a larger tracked grinder for the more open blocks.

Pricing comes off three things: the diameter of the stump at ground level, the species, and how far below grade you want the wood gone. Most Parramatta customers ask for around 200 to 300mm under, which suits fresh turf, paving sand, or a shallow garden bed. If you're laying a slab, putting in a new tree, or building a footing over the spot, we can chase the roots deeper, usually 400 to 500mm, sometimes more.

Once the grinding is done you're left with a mix of fine chips, soil and root fibre in the hole. That fill slumps as the wood breaks down, so for anything you care about, turf, paving, or a build over the top, we recommend pulling the chip out and backfilling with topsoil. We can do that as a line item or you can shovel it yourself. Either way the stump is gone and the area is ready to move on.

Why Parramatta chooses us

A local crew you can actually trust with the job

  • Qualified, insured crews Formal training shows in the judgement calls: when a tree can safely be felled whole, when it has to come down in pieces, and which limb comes off first. Getting those calls right is what protects your roof and fence.. We'll email a current Certificate of Currency before anything is booked. If a limb ever touches a roof, a fence or a car, the claim sits on our policy, not your home cover., so you're covered on every job.
  • Genuinely local A quote visit is a short drive, not next week's appointment, and we already know the City of Parramatta tree rules and which streets need a footpath permit before we pull up.
  • Clear written quotes Send the tree details in the morning and a written price normally lands before evening. Dangerous trees and storm damage jump the queue at any hour, weekends included., itemised and fixed before we start. The price we quote is the price you pay.
  • Safe, tidy work Every cut lands at the branch collar so the tree can close the wound, and we refuse topping outright. Done right, the work is hard to spot within a season. Done badly, it shows for decades.
  • There when it counts The chipper and stump grinder both clear an 800mm side gate, and where nothing fits we crane over the roof instead. The job never stalls because a machine couldn't get in.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How deep does the grinder go?

Standard is 200 to 300mm under the surface, which suits new turf, garden beds or paving sand. For a footing, a slab, or replanting another tree in the same spot we can grind to 400 to 500mm, sometimes deeper if the species and root spread allow. Tell us what's going in and we'll match the depth.

Will the grinder fit through a narrow Parramatta side gate or courtyard?

If the gate is 800mm clear or wider, yes. That covers nearly every Federation, post-war and modern home around Harris Park, Westmead and North Parramatta. For anything narrower, or a stump boxed into an interior courtyard, we walk it on the quote and either crane the smaller machine in or chip down by hand with a smaller tool.

What's left in the hole when you're done?

A blend of wood chips, root fibre and disturbed soil, roughly level with the surrounding ground. That fill drops as the wood rots, so for lawn or paving we'd suggest removing the chip and backfilling with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can leave it, mix in compost, and let it settle a season before planting anything precious.

Can multiple stumps be ground in one visit?

Yes, and it works out cheaper per stump because the mobilisation only happens once. Worth doing all at once if you've inherited a few from old removals, or the previous owners left a row along the back fence. Send through how many and rough diameters and we'll quote the lot together.
